What to expect when you come
|
Before the programme commences, all patients have an initial telephone assessment with the nurse and then the physiotherapist. During this assessment, the programme will be explained and the different programme options explained. This is a good opportunity for the patient to discuss any concerns they may have.
The patient will then be invited for a face to face assessment which will include pulse, blood pressure height & weight followed by a Shuttle Walk Test after which the staff are able to give each patient their individual training heart rate & exercise plan.
The cardiac rehabilitation programme consists of weekly exercise classes held on either Wednesday or Friday mornings. There is also an option to do a home exercise programme using the Heart Manual & BHF exercise circuits. Health education sessions have been recorded & are available online via a link. These talks inclusde the Anatomy & physiology of the heart, risk factors, healthy eating, exercise, medication & stress management. We can also supply a relaxation CD or online link to this
We also have four volunteers who assist during the classes; they are all previous cardiac patients. They help to set up the gym and assist the nurses as needed and are a great support to patients by offering advice and reassurance.

How long does it take
|
The exercise programme runs once a week for 6 weeks on Wednesday or Friday mornings. Each patient is given a copy of their circuit & we encourage you to do these a couple of times during the week between your next hospital session. The rehab team has close links with phase 4 exercise programmes and they encourage all patients to continue exercising after the programme has ended. A phase 4 transfer form will be posted to you on completion of the course if requested.
