About the Programme
The Oxford Radcliffe Cardiac Rehabilitation programme is based at both the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and the Horton Hospital, Banbury. The programme presently sees patients who have an a Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) or have undergone Cardiac Surgery. Patients who have had an angioplasy are given contact details but expected to self-refer. Patients with Heart Failure or those who have an implanted cardiac device are referred by their Cardiologist or specialist nurse. If you have any queries about being referred or feel that cardiac rehabilitation would be appropiate for you, please contact the department administrator on the above telephone number.

What to expect when you come
|
The cardiac rehabilitation nurse will see patient's who have had a heart attack whilst in hospital. At this point they will provide the patient with an information booklet and go through this with the patient. This visit will provide verbal and written information, help identify risk factors and discuss healthier lifestyles, provide advice on how to deal with chest pain, explain driving regulations and answer any other questions the patient or their family may have.
After discharge the nurse will contact the patient within one week of discharge, and send a copy of the cardiac rehabilitation plan to the patient and their G.P. The patient will then be invited to attend the cardiac rehabilitation programme which consists of education sessions at the Horton Hospital, Banbury and a supervised exercise programme either at a local leisure centre (Abingdon, Blackbird Leys or Witney) or as an outpatient at the Horton Hospital cardiac rehabilitation gym in Banbury.
Patients who have undergone Cardiac Surgery are seen briefly on the ward by a member of the cardiac rehabilitation team. Patients then receive a telephone call within two weeks of discharge to introduce and invite them to the programme. The programme then follows a similar pattern to that of the Heart Attack patient.
Again, please discuss with your cardiac rehabilitation nurse or contact the department if you have any questions or are unsure about this.

How long does it take
|
The cardiac rehabilitation programme is 'menu-driven', which means it is individualised, and the length of the programme is according to individual patient need. On average the programme lasts for 3-4 months, with the exercise component lasting in the region of 8-10 weeks. |
