About the Programme

Over 30 years of scientific research has shown that cardiac rehabilitation is a highly effective treatment to reduce the risk of further heart problems and of dying. Many organisations, from the World Health Organization to the British Cardiovascular Society, strongly recommend cardiac rehabilitation for heart patients. The evidence shows that addressing your physical and emotional wellbeing with our support will be an effective way to reduce your risk of future heart problems.

Our programme is designed to improve your quality of life, and manage factors that influence your heart health, such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol and anxiety and depression. We are a friendly team of health professionals dedicated to supporting your recovery.

The team consists of cardiac specialist nurses, dieticians, exercise specialists, clinical psychologists and a Consultant Cardiologist. The team will devise a plan at how best to help you with your on-going care and treatment.

Our specialist nurses will also make sure that you know the correct medications you should be taking and that you understand how your medicines work.

We can advise you on eating a heart-friendly diet, maintaining a healthy weight, returning to physical activities and getting back to work. We also offer you weight loss advice and one-to-one smoking cessation clinics

There are different ways that you can participate - it may be that you join one of our cardiac classes or that a home programme works better for you (see below).

What to expect
when you come

Your first appointment will last for 2 hours and you will be seen by a cardiac nurse, a physical activity specialist and usually a dietitian. We will find out how you and your family are coping and if you have any worries or questions about what has happened to you. We are here to answer those questions for you and give you the most up-to-date advice.

You will then be invited to attend a cardiac class once a week for 6-8 weeks. At the classes you will be booked in by a cardiac nurse who will discuss your progress. You will then take part in an exercise programme that has been adapted for your ability and fitness level. There are also different health talks each week that look at ways to reduce your risk of further heart problems.

Attending the classes is the most beneficial way to improve your overall health. However we realise that it may not be possible for everyone to attend classes so we can offer you a home programme if you prefer. We will discuss the options with you at your first appointment.

Once you have finished the programme you will be seen again in clinic to monitor your progress and give you advice about how to maintain your health going forward.
