What to expect
when you come

Before the programme commences, all patients attend an exercise assessment with the nurse and physiotherapist. During this assessment, the programme will be explained and the patient will be seen individually by the nurse and physiotherapist. This is a good opportunity for the patient to discuss any concerns they may have.

A Shuttle Walk Test then takes place, after which the staff are able to give each patient their individual training heart rate, which they need to exercise to during the circuit.

The cardiac rehabilitation programme consists of twice weekly exercise classes held on Wednesday & Friday mornings. There are also health education sessions either before or after each exercise class. Different speakers lead the education sessions, such as the nurse, dietician, Talking Therapists and pharmacist.

We also have four volunteers who assist during the classes; they are all previous cardiac patients. They help to set up the gym and assist the nurses as needed and are a great support to patients by offering advice and reassurance.

How long does it take

The programme runs twice a week for 6 weeks on Wednesday & Friday mornings. These sessions include an exercise class & a health education talk.

The rehab team has close links with phase 4 exercise programmes and they encourage all patients to continue exercising after the programme has ended. Patients are invited to a reassessment at the end of the 6 week course during which time a phase 4 transfer form is completed.

General information

The cardiac rehabilitation team has close links with the cardiologists at PRH and with those at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. They also have close links with the heart failure nurse specialistS.
Patients needing psychological support can be referred to our Talking Therapists or Clinical Psychologist.
