About the Programme

During your recovery from your cardiac event, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team can offer advice and support for you and your family and can answer any questions you may have.

Our team covers the Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale and Pocklington areas and we currently offer exercise and education classes in Scarborough, Whitby and Malton (due to Covid-19 pandemic no classes currently running).

Our aims are:
- to help you to be active and exercise safely
- to help you recognise and manage your symptoms
- to support you to make individual lifestyle changes
- to offer you advice and support to achieve the goals that are important to you

Usually, you will be referred to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team. Once we receive your referral we will contact you by telephone or letter.
However, if you are unsure about whether you have been referred, do not hesitate to contact us.
Please find our contact details below.

We will arrange an initial consultation appointment with you. This may be at home, in clinic or by telephone.
During your initial consultation we will discuss your cardiac event, review your current symptoms and treatment, discuss cardiovascular risk reduction and help you to find ways to achieve your goals.
We will offer you appropriate resources which may include the Heart Manual, the British Heart Foundation and signposting to other services. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
We will arrange to contact you again to review your progress but would always encourage you to contact us sooner with any concerns.
At your initial appointment we will also discuss the different Cardiac Rehabilitation programmes available to you.

We offer individualised programmes which are carried out at home with support from the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team.

We also offer group-based programmes.
These exercise and education classes are for patients who prefer face-to-face contact in a group and who are able to attend the class every week (due to Covid-19 pandemic no classes currently running).

Classes are held at:
Scarborough Rugby Club: Mondays 1.15pm until 3.15pm
Whitby Hospital: Wednesdays 9.15am until 11.15am
Malton Hospital: Fridays 1.15pm until 3.15pm

What to expect
when you come

If you choose the home-based programme we will arrange an individual appointment with you. We will focus on the goals you wish to achieve and how we can best support you through activity and educational advice on life-style changes.
We will arrange to contact you regularly throughout your treatment to discuss and review your progress.

If you choose the group-based programme we will ask you to attend an initial assessment. This lasts about one hour and will help determine what you wish to achieve from attending the class.

The classes are a combination of exercise and education.

Following discussion with the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team it may be possible to undertake a combination of both the home-programme and the group-based programme (due to Covid-19 pandemic no classes currently running).

How long does it take

This is individual to each person's needs and we will discuss this with you throughout your programme.
