About the Programme

The Cardiac Rehabilitation team is located at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby. The team is made up of cardiac rehabilitation nurses, exercise specialists, dietician and a clinical psychologist. The main hospital based programme is run from St Cross Hospital but we are happy to plan a home based programme for you. Patients with the following cardiac conditions are offered cardiac rehabilitation; heart attack, Cardiac Surgery (Bypass or valve), angioplasty/stent, heart failure, ICD.

What to expect
when you come

Rugby patients admitted to University Hospital at Coventry will automatically be referred to our rehabilitation programme. During your stay at University Hospital you will be seen by one of our Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurses. During this initial consultation we will provide you with all the necessary information that will help you plan your discharge and those early couple of weeks at home. We will also provide you with details of our rehabilitation follow-up and a discharge booklet of information. Out of area referrals are recieved by fax and we will contact on receipt of this referral to arrange a clinic appointment. We aim to offer you an appointment within 5 working days of discharge. All patients will be telephoned within 48 hours of discharge and a date will be arranged for you to be reviewed in our nurse led clinic.At this appointment your nurse will discuss your recent cardiac event and will help to plan your recovery.

How long does it take

Your Rehabilitation will be planned to meet your own personal needs and goals. You will be invited to attend our weekly Heart Information Sessions. These are held at the hospital on a Monday mornings 10-12pm. There are six sessions to attend over 3 weeks. Week one: Understanding & Managing Your Heart Condition and Rugby Take Heart Support Group, week two: Medications for the heart and Physical Activity guidence and Week Three: Healthy Eating & The Emotional Impacts of a Heart Event. These sessions are very informal and your partner/carer is also welcome. Depending on your diagnosis an exercise plan will be discussed and agreed, you may start as early as 10 days following your cardiac event and for some patients who have had cardiac surgery you will be invited to attend between 4-6 weeks after your. All patients prior to starting on the exercise programme are invited to attend a fitness assessment with our Exercise Specialist. Don't worry!!!!! at this appointment you will have the opportunity to meet our exercise specialist to discuss your activity goals and also complete a 6 minute stationery bike assessment. This appointment is important in helping us plan your rehabilitation and helping you achieve your goals. Following this appointment you can either join our 10 weeks exercise programme on Tuesday & Friday mornings. Heart Failure patients will be contacted directly by the Heart Failure Specialist Nurse who will discuss your rehabilitation plan.

General information

Once you have completed either our hospital-based or home based rehabilitation programme you will have the opportunity to join one of our many community exercise programmes. We have sessions available in the day at The Queens Diamond Jubilee Centre and Wolston Community and Leisure Centre and in the evenings at St Cross Hospital and Thornfield Bowling Club. There is a small fee to attend each session. These sessions are run by our exercise instructors who are qualified British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase IV Instructors. We are also fortunate to have a very active Heart Support Group, Take Heart. With over 400 members their small committee work hard throughout the year to provide many excellent meetings and social events. In addition to our mainstream programme you will have the opportunity to access one of our monthly supermarket tours with our Cardiovascular Dietician, as well as having an appointment to discuss any goals you want to achieve individually with our dietician. we also offer Basic Life Supoort (CPR) training throughout the year to patients and carers.
